Review
“Brilliant, wise, informative, innovative, entertaining, and urgently needed, this timely book is a godsend for all who love children, and for children themselves. It provides a doable plan for providing the kind of childhood kids desperately need today!”—Edward Hallowell, M.D., author of The Childhood Roots of Adult Happiness“A wealth of practical ideas for reclaiming childhood and establishing family harmony.”—Publishers Weekly“Brilliant.”—Grand Rapids Press“[Payne is] like a master closet reorganizer for the soul.”—Time“This book is a wake-call for all of us who have misjudged what children need and can handle, and who have wandered so far from the best practices that we are raising neurologically damaged and emotionally stunted human beings as a result. Simplicity Parenting arises from dialogues with real people, from their questions and their needs. Kim John Payne is sharp, funny, and wise, and—best of all—he has something shattering but positive to say to an America that is struggling to know how to live.”—Steve Biddulph, author of The Secret of Happy Children “If you are raising children in these anxious times, you need this book. It will inspire you, reassure you, and, most important of all, it will remind you that less is more, that simplicity trumps complication, that rhythm and routine bring peace to the soul. In this profound and practical guide, Kim John Payne offers parents a doable, step-by-step approach to simplifying everyday family life, from the toy box to the dinner table. In the process, he reveals to us the rewards to be found in slowing down, savoring our children’s childhoods, and more fully enjoying our own adult lives.”—Katrina Kenison, author of The Gift of an Ordinary Day “Simplicity Parenting takes the unusual and unusually wise stance that sometimes less can be more. Less as in less frenetic activity, less racing around, less clutter. Payne provides practical strategies for turning down the volume and creating a pace that fosters calmness, mindfulness, reflection, and individuality in children. Simplicity Parenting should be on every parent’s (indeed, every person’s) reading list.”—Kathleen A. Brehony, Ph.D., author of Awakening at Midlife “Kim John Payne helps parents better understand one of the most challenging issues of our time–the hurried, materialistic, competitive, highly pressured nature of today’ s childhood. After reading Simplicity Parenting, parents’ new mantra will be ‘less builds security, sanity, and connection.’ And they will have the tools they need for implementing this mantra in their families.”—Diane E. Levin, Ph.D., co-author of So Sexy So Soon

We have been having struggles with a defiant 10 year old and this book has really opened my eyes. The book could be describing her in some parts. I can see where we have been going down the wrong path and it's hard to put into words how much I appreciate someone being able to show us the right path. For years we blindly accepted what we were told by media and even other parents and never realizing the damage we were doing to our family. I just wish I had known about this book 10 years ago but am grateful I have it now. I had already decluttered our home so it was nice to have a head start. Without sounding hokey, this book has changed our lives.
I have felt so many of these things, as a parent, but wasn't sure if I was just weird...desiring to approach things more simply...but what do you do with birthday parties and the loads of presents from family artery Christmas...what about the pressures for your 4 year old to play multiple sports? This book is so good and I truly wish I had read it when my first son was born...things might have been easier. I plan to buy it for my brother when their baby is born.
This book clicked on so many levels with me. I have been always in the mindframe of loving the simple things and I live very clutter free life but the book is well written and added new point of view for me. The author is just great at writing it in an easy to read language, without making it sounds like he is giving you lessons . It is more of a combination of his way of thinking and the expirience he got from working with many parents. I strongly reccomand this book and have gifted it to a few friends who are moms and study psychology. Thank you for the great read.
This is the "less is more" of parenting, as far as material items are concerned. As a parent of grown sons and a new grandparent, I read this book with pleasure. The author presents some of the most important ideas for parents in a more contemporary context than books from my era that I still see from time to time. Children do best with less stimulation than most have in our culture. They have the opportunity to discover the world, their own creativity, on their own terms. They develop more skill and intelligence when they are not overly distracted or have the need to develop defenses against sensory overload. The author does take the first section a bit too slowly, though, I think. I encourage readers who may put down the book at that point to choose later chapters as they appeal to them and keep reading and considering what he presents.
Amazing ideas. Simple, yet so effective. Implemented many ideas in our home about 6 months ago and now my daughters have just asked to share a room bc they are best friends. 10 and 5 yrs old so the age gap isn’t the best at times but I’ve found that by using ideas in this book the age gap is never an issue at all!
As a clinical psychologist, and mother to an 18-month old, I cannot say enough wonderful things about this book. Since becoming pregnant, I have felt this certain 'pressure' to do do do for my child. Intuitively, I felt that it was too much, both for me and my child. This book helped me see how it was too much. My favorite part of course, as with everyone else, is the chapter on toys. I got rid of (put away) all toys that did not sustain my daughter's attention or were just plain annoying! I am trying to minimize the amount of toys, keep an open space, and buy only toys that stimulate her imagination. What I am finding is that I am a lot more interested in her world because of this (what adult can really stand Elmo for too long). I have backed off from feeling that I need to play with her, and as a result, am more calm and aware of her. We also started integrating a day of the week (sundays) where my husband and I do not use the internet or tv. We found ourselves feeling calmer and feeling more bonded as a family. There are probably a million more things that I could say about this book, but the bottom line: do not hyperparent (or your child will end up in my office with anxiety or related concern), keep things calm, get rid of ugly or loud plastic toys, and get out into nature! Read this book:-)
For an intro to Waldorf, this is not a recommended read, it’s too slooow at getting to the point , making it difficult to stay interested and engaged
Practical, kind and insightful. This is almost like a guide that gives you steps for simplifying your child's life. I appreciate this book so much, especially as my kids are still small and we're still creating the climate of our childrens' childhoods.
